Dennis Montgomery, long-time master of the MV Haendel, had passion for bringing people onto the lake. From 2002 to 2013 he piloted thousands of interpretive programs and sunset tours, and with the help of similarly dedicated volunteers, initiated Cayuga Lake’s Floating Classroom.
Since its inception, the Floating Classroom has served many community groups and every school district in the Cayuga Lake Watershed, inspiring young stewards of the lake and its watershed. These students have monitored the water quality, been on the watch for invasive species, and educated themselves and their families about important environmental issues.
Dennis recognized the importance of providing lake access for everyone—regardless of background or financial means. He knew that connecting more people to the lake was the surest path toward a healthy, beautiful lake in the future. With that in mind, friends established the Dennis Montgomery Memorial Fund to provide financial aid to needy schools and organizations wishing to enjoy the lake. Tax-deductible donations in Dennis' memory can be made through the Center for Transformative Action's online donation system, which will allow you to personalize your contribution. Alternatively, checks may be sent to the Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom, 119 Anabel Taylor Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853. Acknowledgement of your donation and tax deductible receipt will be provided.
